New year, New ConwyMC?
It’s been a while since I actually talked to everyone about what’s happen on the server. The last plan was to open up the server in November, but after the last Spooktober play session, nothing was said. Sadly, the server did not open in November, so what happened?
Change of Ownership
Huntifi has been the owner of ConwyMC for several years now and has brought the server to the level it is currently at. Sadly they have decided they no longer wish to work on ConwyMC. I (Greenfoot5) decided to have a go at getting the server open and asked Hunt if he’d like to fully pass over the mantle. Hunt agreed and I have now finished the handover of the code, the server and the data. Huntifi has chosen to stay on as an Admin on the server, but their main focus will likely be on the backrooms server that they’re working on.
I hope I can live up to the standards set so far as owner of ConwyMC.
When’s the server opening?
When it’s ready. I want to open when the server is ready, and I’m sorry it’s not ready yet. I’m hoping to open the server in January, worst case in February.
What’s still to come?
First is bug fixes, as there’s some outstanding from previous test sessions. Voting, spectator and advancements are the three big ones currently.
I’d also like to expand (and fix) advancements and overhaul levels. I want to review the levels system to give more levels earlier so certain features can be locked behind levels at the start, but not for long. The idea is that as players level up they unlock new content/commands they can use and learn about as they unlock it. Advancements will be used to show what’s to earn and also to provide additional rewards to new players to help them get started. As the data will be reset upon release, all players will get the chance to earn these rewards, even if they already know how to play.
Lastly is a tutorial. It’s been on our to do list forever. The first problem to tackle is some assumptions made when creating the plugin that are baked into how it functions. These can be solved but will just take time. The second problem is how do you make a tutorial for a multiplayer pvp game?
Most likely the release version will teach the very basics, but created in a way we can easily build upon later (for example, catapults won’t be in the first version)
After those three things have been made, I think the server will be ready for a soft opening, where players can hop on and test ready for a full release. Once fully released advertising (and possibly a referral program) can begin. Staff applications will also open again shortly after the server release, including for an events team to help organise events. I’d also really like to bring back matches, but I’m probably getting ahead of myself.
What’s not coming?
Sadly, not everything can make it into release. Currently, there’s only one developer (myself) so development is quite slow. To release the server in January some stuff will have to be put on hold:
- Physical Shop - Having somewhere to play around with and test kits is awesome. Sadly this is quite problematic to code thanks to assumptions made when creating the gamemode After the tutorial it will be a lot easier to add content outside of castle siege and we can take another look at this. Instead, you’ll be able to buy kits through the kit gui.
- Castle Siege Menu - Something that’s very useful to have, and certainly will be present in the release, but it’s functionality will be far reduced. After release this will be high up on the list to expand and make more useful.
- More secrets - We need to rework how secrets are coded, currently much of it is manual and requires a developer to implement. So the current secrets will stay implemented, but no new ones added until a new system for creating them is added.
Any new content?
You mean you want more? Fine. Along with Fantasy Madness I’m hoping to add three new maps, one completely new. However, their implementation depends on completing the programming first. These new maps are a secondary focus to the plugin’s functionality.
